MOD Pizza continues UK expansion with Gateshead opening

US fast and casual pizza chain MOD Pizza is continuing its expansion into the UK with the opening of a new venue in Gateshead’s intu Metrocentre.

The brand, which was founded in Seattle in 2008 has over 160 sites located across 18 states in the US, currently has restaurants in London and Brighton. Specialising in hand-fired pizzas, all offered at the set price of £7.47, with guest able to choose from over 30 toppings.

The company is the brainchild of Scott and Ally Svenson who founded the Seattle Coffee Company, before selling to Starbucks, and who also helped build the Carluccio’s brand.

The roll-out of the brand into the UK is being backed by Carphone Warehouse magnates Sir Charles Dunstone and Roger Taylor, who have formed a joint venture with MOD Pizza in the UK through personal investment company Freston Ventures. Freston has also invested in Five Guys burgers.

MOD has appointed former Nando’s operations director John Nelson as chief executive officer of its UK operations.

The company has partnered with local charity Children North East who will receive 100% of proceeds from pizza sales from the 10 November opening day.

Nelson said: ‘We are thrilled to bring MOD to Gateshead and to introduce the community to our incredible pizza and the special people-first culture. MOD is a company focused on taking care of its people and community.  We hope people will come down to see what all the buzz is about.’
